Your Independent Financial Lifeguard

Why I don't want to manage your money. I want to help you manage your life.
One of the questions I've been asked throughout my career is:
"If you don't charge a percentage of my investments, what exactly am I paying for?"
It's a fair question.
The answer came to me recently through a simple analogy.
Imagine you're learning to swim.
Water isn't the enemy.
In fact, water can be wonderful.
But it deserves respect.
If you can't swim, you fear it.
If you overestimate your ability, you can get into serious difficulty.
So what do you do?
You learn to swim.
You build confidence.
You develop judgement.
Eventually, you swim independently.
That, to me, is what life planning should achieve.
The financial world is full of water.
Every one of us swims through institutions.
Banks.
Pension providers.
Mortgage lenders.
Investment companies.
Insurance firms.
Employers.
Government departments.
Some are excellent.
Some are confusing.
Some have commercial interests that don't always align with yours.
You can't avoid the water.
But you can become a more capable swimmer.
That's why I created Academy OS.
It's a free collection of tools, apps, articles and learning resources designed to help people understand, organise and navigate their financial lives with greater confidence. It exists to strengthen your capability, not your dependence.
Most people don't need a financial planner all the time.
In fact, I believe something I've said for years:
Most people can manage around 90% of their finances, 90% of the time.
So why would I try to convince you otherwise?
My aim has never been to create clients for life.
It's to help you become increasingly capable of making your own decisions.
That's why Academy OS is free.
It's the equivalent of swimming aids.
You learn.
You practise.
You become more confident.
But sometimes the water changes.
Even experienced swimmers can be caught out.
A rip current.
A sudden storm.
Unexpected fatigue.
Financial life is no different.
Retirement.
Bereavement.
Divorce.
Redundancy.
Inheritance.
Selling a business.
Receiving a large pension.
A potential scam.
Those are moments when knowledge alone may not be enough.
Sometimes you simply want an experienced, independent person beside you to think things through before you act.
That's where a Total Wealth Planner comes in.
Not to take over.
Not to make decisions for you.
Not to manage your assets.
But to be your Independent Financial Lifeguard.
Someone who:
helps you spot danger before it becomes a crisis;
offers an independent second opinion when something doesn't feel right;
helps you think clearly when emotions are running high;
restores confidence when life becomes unusually complex;
stands beside you—not in front of you.
The goal is always the same.
To help you return to confident, independent swimming.
A different kind of relationship
Traditional financial advice often centres around managing money.
Our relationship centres around supporting people.
That's why our subscriptions are built around proportional planning.
Choose the level of support that's right for your life.
More when you need it.
Less when you don't.
Whether you simply want the reassurance of having an Independent Financial Lifeguard in your corner, or you'd benefit from structured annual, quarterly or monthly planning reviews, the support grows and reduces with your circumstances—not because you're expected to become dependent on it.
Planning before products
I've never believed people should pay because someone is holding their investments.
I believe they should pay when an experienced professional genuinely adds value.
Sometimes that's once a year.
Sometimes it's four times.
Sometimes life becomes so demanding that monthly support makes sense.
Most of the time, you'll be perfectly capable of managing things yourself.
And that's exactly how it should be.
Ready to enter the water?
If you value your independence but also like the idea of having an experienced, independent financial lifeguard ready when life becomes more complicated, explore the support options available through Total Wealth Planner.
Because the goal isn't to become dependent on a planner.
It's to become confident enough to swim through life knowing someone is there when you genuinely need them.
